Using your skein of yarn
Turning a skein of yarn into a ball or cake is an essential step before you start knitting or crocheting, as it helps prevent tangling and makes the yarn easier to work with. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you do it smoothly:
🧶 What You'll Need:
- A skein of yarn
- Scissors
- (Optional) A yarn swift and ball winder
- (Alternative) A friend or chair-back and your hands
🪡 Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Untwist the Skein
- Untwist the skein gently to open it into a big loop.
- Either use a swift if you have one or lay it over the back of a chair, or have someone hold it with arms outstretched.
2. Find the Ties
- You'll see a few pieces of yarn tied around the loop to keep it together. These will contain a knot.
- Carefully snip these knotted ties (not the actual ends of the yarn) and remove them.
3. Find the Yarn End
- One of these ties will contain both ends of the skein.
- Look for the outer end of the yarn (not the one tucked in) and begin winding.
4. Start Winding by Hand; or use a ball winder
By hand:
- Wrap the yarn loosely around your fingers to form a small bundle.
- Slide it off and begin wrapping the yarn diagonally around it in all directions.
- This builds a ball rather than a tight wad, allowing it to “give” as you work.
Ball winder:
- Attach the end of the yarn to the ball winder and crank it to make a tidy centre-pull cake.
📝 Tips:
- Don’t pull too tight—it can stretch and damage the yarn.
- If it tangles, stop and gently loosen knots before continuing.
- Always wind the entire skein before working with it.
